Copper Starfish ...

I've been playing with some copper sheet metal this week. With summer just around the corner, I thought some starfish ornaments for the cottage would be fun and here are the results. The shapes were hand drawn on cardboard and then transferred to the copper. Next, I cut, sanded, shaped and hammered each one. Torch firing created the pretty patina of gorgeous color in the copper. Some I antiqued and polished to achieve a more rustic finish. Shiny copper wire hangers with a spiral flourish finish them off! I have two hanging on our guest bath right now!

I love this story about a starfish--

“Once upon a time, there was a wise man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach before he began his work. One day, as he was walking along the shore, he looked down the beach and saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself at the thought of someone who would dance to the day, and so, he walked faster to catch up. As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, and that what he was doing was not dancing at all. The young man was reaching down to the shore, picking up small objects, and throwing them into the ocean. He came closer still and called out "Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?" The young man paused, looked up, and replied "Throwing starfish into the ocean." "I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?" asked the somewhat startled wise man. To this, the young man replied, "The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don't throw them in, they'll die." Upon hearing this, the wise man commented, "But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can't possibly make a difference!" At this, the young man bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it into the ocean. As it met the water, he said, "It made a difference for that one.” ― Loren Eiseley

Industrial Mod Collection~ new at Wild Woman Jewelry

'Only the truth is revolutionary.'

***********
A few years ago, I saw the Broadway Musical, Rent-- I loved everything about it...the performance, the music and the amazing set! My passions for theatre, set design and an industrial esthetic were completely satisfied in this artistic endeavor and have inspired a number of my own creative undertakings-- most recently a line of jewelry featuring clean lines, rustic finishes, bits of color and repurposed materials. I hope you enjoy them!

The Forgotten Path...

' In the middle of the journey of our life, I found myself within a dark forest, where the straight path was lost.'

I've been experimenting recently, using different metals, finishes and moods in my jewelry - while I still LOVE color, I am also drawn to a more rustic, simpler esthetic. The dark metals, uneven edges and open yet hidden spaces in these gorgeous antiqued copper floral etched beads reminded me of overgrown paths in an abandoned garden...and how sometimes, losing the straight path is the best possible thing that could happen.
