From My Bench - Photo Shoot Today

A peek into one of my photo shoots!

 

The light is great today - bright but overcast.  My little 'set' includes the windowsill (if the sun comes out, I can just pull down the blind), my NikonD80 SLR, a piece of cardboard I covered in tinfoil to reflect back the light, a piece of chicken wire that I've folded in half to support several sheets of white cardstock that I tape together and slope slightly to eliminate seams and shadows in the background. 

 

My 'go to' props are this little tin candleholder which I use ALL the time, a penny and ruler for scale, and sometimes a small ivory china dish. 

 

I have about 35 new pieces ready to photograph which means several hours and probably about 500 images - it's a ton of work and 80% will be too dark, blurry, too light or just plain bad! The other 20% will likely contain enough decent shots that I can edit them and use them for my listings in the shop. Some may have to be redone again- I'm on the third time for a pair of sterling silver hammered hoops that I just can't get the light right...maybe today's the day!

I've Been Running the Roads this Week...

 

...spending time with my husband and friends but I did land in the studio long enough to finish some pretty sterling stamped leaf earrings and fabricate a few other pieces. I gave these lightweight lovelies a patina bath and a good polish to highlight the leaves.  The earwires are square sterling wire soldered to the back of the discs.

 My other project was a couple of pairs of bezel studs. I'm obsessed with making bezel settings and all the forms in which they can be designed. Making the stud earrings seemed a bit uncertain for me - I was concerned that simply soldering the post to the baseplate wouldn't be strong or durable enough for long term wear.  Hubs has a fair amount of metalworking experience in other fields and I expressed my worries to him -- over a glass of wine the other night! :).  He suggested I drill the baseplate, insert the post and then heat to draw the solder into the bezel...genius! It was the

perfect solution! These cuties are made with vintage light turquoise glass and fun peacock feather patterned paper under glass - and I'm confident the posts are secure!! What do you think?

 

 

 

Rain, Computer Meltdown and New Work!

 Add a new computer (I nearly lost my entire hard drive...but it's been rescued by my most talented, patient husband!) and several days of rain, and I've had a wonderfully productive week in the studio! Drop by the shop to see what's NEW!  And don't forget, there are over 100 pieces that are in limited supply and are discontinued ON SALE now!

 

 

Excitedly Waiting for New Tools...

I want to cereal for lunch and am not ready for bed til the middle of the night but we are officially back in Canada and adjusting to the 7 hour time change.  In many ways, it's good to be home and back to work (even if it is at odd hours!).  I've been planning improvements and additions to my workbench, ordering new tools and materials and am so ready to get started using some of my new metalworking skills.  Many of my new toys have arrived but I'm still waiting for the main parcel of equipment, including my flexshaft, disc cutters, soldering supplies and a new torch!!!

 

Today, to distract myself from the waiting (and to get some work done too), I decided to make some new earrings.  The shop is getting restocked with new and returning items and I made a few of each today. I needed to revamp my oxidizing station so that happened as well! These photos show my set up  - which is also my laundry room.  I love the natural light in this room - it has two large windows - which is also helpful for the smell of the liver of sulfur...good ventilation is absolutely necessary!

Then, I headed for my workbench. It needed a serious re- working to make room for the new tools and equipment and to better utilize my work space.  Because it's in the basement and there is no natural light, the top got a coat of bright green paint to add some color - I plan to spend a fair bit of time here and want it to feel happy and fun! A second little desk (don't you just love this vintage enamel table top?) means I can keep an eye on the shop without running up and down stairs all day (although the exercise wouldn't kill me :).  Looking at these photos, I can see that I'm a bit of a clutterbug in this room!  So, maybe those tools will arrive tomorrow...fingers crossed!  Otherwise, who knows what will get organized next!

Yesterday, I received my latest order of gorgeous sparkly gemstones, my fingers are twitching and I have the whole morning in front of me! New Gemmies on their way to the shop - yay!

Garnet, Smoky Quartz, London Blue Topaz, Tourmaline, Citrine, Peridot, Amethyst, Mystic Blue Quartz, Aqua and Burnt Orange Chalcedony -- all sparkling loveliness!

Long Dangle Statement Earrings are NEW!

Cheerful Colorfall Earrings have been popular at the shop this summer...made with whimsically shaped dyed shell beads that I've linked with sterling silver, they are a rainbow fashion statement!  They've been so enjoyed, I decided to offer them at Wild Woman online too!   Now, in warm autumn hues of gold and brown, this design is also available in Tiger's Eye semi-prescious stones and 14k-20k goldfill and soon to come, Amethyst!

Casual Fridays Earrings are one of a kind!

I love casual Fridays! blue jeans, crisp white blouse...I was always looking for the perfect pair of earrings (and here they are!).  On my worktable, I keep little piles of beads and bits that look pretty together.  I add to the piles over time and every so often, I dig into them to see if anything is ready to be made.  On Monday, these seemed to jump right out from the little piles! Happy red glass, upcycled silver metal washers, denim blue enameled metal disks and sparkly faceted glass are casually elegant and fun too. I made pretty sterling silver square wire earwires that are simple and secure and I'm a fan of the little dangles too -- I love them!         happy day xo
